- Kiwengwa Caves Visit

These caves represent the ancient history of the Zanzibar Island used by locals for worshiping their ancestors, bringing gifts to the holy stones.
You can visit the caves from the hotel located to the north. The stalagmites and stalactites minerals have been formed from weak acid (Carbonic Acid) in water combined or reacted with limestone rocks within the cave . We recommend to use of flashlights (torches) because the caves go deep as you progress inward; however, the naturally formed holes in the upper roof of the caves permit sunlight in, creating an exciting outlook.
The cave has also fantastic roots like features that have forced their way through the ground and look like electric wires connecting the upper part to the bottom part of the cave.
After wonderful experience in the cave, the guest will be guided to a tour in Kiwengwa – Pongwe Forest Reserve – the only remaining high coral rag forest in the northern part of Zanzibar. During walking, you may well catch a glimpse of some endemic species such as the red Columbus monkey, duikers (big antelope) and mini antelope. There are also 47 bird species and many butterflies etc.
